What is Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)?
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a humane, effective method for managing and reducing the population of community cats—unowned cats who live outdoors.
With TNE, community cats are humanely trapped, then taken to a veterinary clinic to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and eartipped (a small, painless removal of the tip of one ear to indicate the cat has been sterilized). After recovery, they are returned to their outdoor home where they are familiar and comfortable.
Why does TNR matter?
TNR ends the breeding cycle, which means no new kittens are born into a colony. Over time, the population stabilizes and declines. Scientific studies show that TNR:
Reduces shelter intake and euthanasia
Lowers the number of animal control calls
Improves cats’ health and behavior
Saves taxpayer dollars
Once sterilized, cats are no longer driven by mating behaviors—there’s less yowling, fighting, spraying, and roaming. They become quieter neighbors and are often better tolerated by the communities they live in.
TNR also helps reunite lost pets with their families: cats caught during TNR efforts are routinely scanned for microchips and returned to their owners when possible.
TNR is a proven. compassionate solution that protects cats and benefits the whole community.
